Today is International Noise Awareness Day

Which has me wondering about noise pollution. It’s not like pollutions we can see, but we can feel it and it can cause us problems.

I wonder – how much noise is too much noise?

Every morning, starting at 7, I hear construction noises next door where they are building a six-story condo complex. Trucks are constantly beeping as drivers back up into the site.

And then I wonder- Are there rules or laws about how long a noise can last before you can complain to officials about it?

What would I do, or could I do to stop that noise or reduce it?

I’m also thinking about my great grandmother, Julia Barnett Rice, and what she did to reduce what she called unnecessary noise, over 100 years ago. She and the group she started, The Society for the Suppression of Unnecessary Noise, were successful in persuading the government in New York City to create quiet zones around hospitals and schools.
